Thomas E Hoeflich, Army combat medic

Thomas E. Hoeflich, 45, formerly of Snyder, died March 22, 2002 in Venice, Fla. Born in Buffalo, Hoeflich was a 1974 graduate of Amherst High School and attended the University at Buffalo, then went to Southern California to join his brothers in their classic car restoration business. When they closed the business, he became an automotive service writer for Sears and Nissan.

He enlisted in the Army in 1990 and was the oldest person in his basic training class, joining the Army Medical Corps as a combat medic. He had been recommended for officer candidate school just before he was severely injured while serving at the 38th Parallel in Korea.

During his long recovery, he lived iwth his parents in Western New York and Florida and became an advocate for disabled veterans. He was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a founder and past persident of the American Vetrans Liver Foundation.

He bought a home in Florida in June 2001 and served as a religious education teacher at St. John’s Catholic Church in St. Petersburg Beach.

Survivors include his parents, Edward and Marion of St. Petersburg Beach and Sunset Island in Wilson; three brothers, Garry of Rancho, Santa Magarita, California, Chris of Ventura, California and David of Depew; and a sister, Susan McDuffee of Glouster, Mass.

Services were held March 26 in St. Petersburg Beach. Burial was in Bay Pines Veterans Memorial Gardens, St. Petersburg, Fla.2
