Eulogy
We are here today to celebrate the life of Carol Myers, a great lady that Sandie, Mary K and I are proud to call our mom.

Carol grew up in East Aurora with her 7 brothers and 2 sisters. During World War II 5 of her brothers simultaneously served in the war effort.

Mom worked in various jobs during her life including being a cub reporter for the Buffalo Evening News, until being forced to resign because married women were not allowed as reporters for the News.

She worked at Lakeside Laundry, as a Fisher Price assembly line worker (I loved my Fisher Price wooden race car with the drivers head that popped up and down as it moved), as a cook at Bursts Tavern, as an elementary school cafeteria worker and finally as a Pharmacist Assistant.

One of the things that mom prided herself on was that she put us three kids though college without us needing any loans. Thank you mom (and dad).

I’ll always remember the story of how mom met dad. Mom was an avid and accomplished roller skater. One day while rollerskating, mom knocked dad to his feet (I heard on purpose). That was the start of a relationship that included 62 years of marriage. Mom and dad did most everything together. They were a very loving couple.

Now If you knew our mom, you would also know she was a very social person. She loved entertaining, I can’t tell you how many fancy hors dourves I helped make for the many parties mom and dad threw. Mom had many friends.

Mom was also one of the organizers of the Nocturnes Dance Club which had huge themed dances. We spent many hours decorating for these dances.

Then there were all the pool parties at our house including a Luau with a grass hut, “Pete the Parrot” and more.

Of course there were also many bridge clubs mom participated in, from Lancaster to St Petes to Rochester.

Can’t forget the round robin holiday parties held for many many years in Lancaster. With each house outdoing themselves with food and cheer.

When she moved to Florida she continued her tradition of entertaining, meeting with friends and enjoying herself.

And yes she loved her manhattans. After needing pain meds for her cancer, the top palliative care doctor at Strong Hospital prescribed a manhattan for her dinner time pain medication.

Mom also loved knitting. She made blankets and sweaters for all the grandkids and for many many babies for her and our friends.

There are so many things to tell, from our “Gremlin” car she bought because it was all we could afford to cutting a christmas tree and bringing it home with the top down and heat on full. I could go on forever.

Mom had a very full life, she enjoyed traveling, museums, entertaining and people.

But what mom most loved was family. She loved her kids, their spouses and especially her grandkids.

We will miss you mom Always!
Prayer Card
Welcome Home
When I am gone, release me, let me go
I have so many things to see and do.
You mustn’t tie yourselves to me with tears,
just be happy that we had some years.
I gave you my love, you can only guess
how much you gave to me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you each have shown,
but now it’s time I traveled on alone.
Do grieve a while for me if you must
then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It’s only for a while that we must part,
so keep our memories within your hearts.
I won’t be far away, for life goes on.
So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can’t see or touch me I’ll be near,
and if you listen with your heart you will hear,
All of my love around so soft and dear.
When you must come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile and say
“Welcome Home”.

Watkins Glenn Adventure,

Lubi’s and us were having a get together at our backyard. (Can’t remember if we had pool then or not). Discussion came up about going to see Watkins Glenn and both families thought it would be fun. I’m guessing it was about 8pm or so and it was on a Saturday. So to have time to see glenn and get back we drove down together, two cars. Lubi’s had a station wagon.
We arrived well after dark and drove in and parked in a parking lot and then slept in the cars. (most kids in back of station wagon).
When we awoke Sunday morning we found we had almost driven off the edge of the parking lot. But was still on the lot.....remember laughing about it and discussion about how they were luck as they couldn’t see much in the dark.
We all went to the local church, looking all rumbled, but we went. It was like a twilight zone church and everyone looked at us.
Then we went back and hiked the gorge, picnicked and later back home.

Our dad had many names; LaVerne, Vern, Gadget, Kais, Kaiser, Dad, Lala and Gramps to name a few. But by any name everyone always liked him and knew him for the easy going person he was. Dad was a straight shooter or as he would say “I don’t speak with forked tongue”.

Dad was the sixth of seven children. Lloyd, Earl, Eugene, Norman, Katherine, LaVerne and his surviving younger sister Marion. He went to St Mary’s Catholic school and was the first quarterback of the football team in 1941. He left high school and joined the Navy on Sept 9, 1943 and served to Mar 22, 1946. He went to the Sampson Navel Training camp on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake where he met Moe Heitz also from the Buffalo area who became a life long friend. I still remember them joking “Company 354 will win the war” when they were together.

He was originally assigned to the USS Saratoga, thankfully the ship had to leave early which was good as it was sunk. Dad was then assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Lexington, which is now a museum in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was a Gunners Mate 3rd Class. He served in Hawaii before it became a state and was sheltered in the only hotel on the island of Oahu, the Royal Hawaiian on Waikiki Beach, Honolulu.

After the war Dad came back to Lancaster where he met Mom while roller skating in East Aurora. She literally knocked him off his feet while doing “Crack the whip”. Both Dad and Mom were great roller skaters and later great dancers. They started the “Nocturne’s Dance Club” in Lancaster. They would throw dances with hundreds involved. Mom and Dad were very big on entertaining. They had lots of pool parties at our house including a Hawaiian Luau where they made a grass hut out of Cat tails. They did a yearly Round Robin dinner with the Heitz’s, Farey’s, Enser’s, Foxes, Uebelhoer’s, Richard’s, Lubi’s, Hattler’s and many more.

Dad loved his cars. He had one that had a donkey hood ornament with light up eyes. Then of course his white cadillac’s that had room in the trunk for 4 sets of golf clubs. “They don’t make them like they used to”.

Dad was always a good worker. He worked for Westinghouse Electric on the motor division, Pizzigatti construction company as a laborer on heavy construction (roads and such). Depew Paving putting in roads. Lake Side Laundry with his brother Lloyd and Mom. Then finally at New York State Electric & Gas where he started as a driver-workman. After going nights to Erie Community College and receiving his Associates Degree in Electronics under the GI Bill, he became a relay technician, also known as System Protection and Control. He went on to became the manger of the relay department from which he retired.

He often worked two jobs. As a second job he worked as a bartender at the American Legion where he became commander of Post 287. Every memorial day our family would help the Legion put geraniums on hundreds of veterans graves. Dad also played slow pitch softball for the Legion team where was the pitcher.

Mom and Dad moved into St Johns Meadows when Mom was sick, it was a great place. Dad took over all the house chores and adapted very well. After Mom passed, Dad continued being the solid no nonsense person he was. He would check his email every day and print it out showing it to Mary Kay, me or the family and grandkids when we would come each day for lunch or visit with him. Everyone in St Johns knew him and liked his smile and great disposition.

Just recently he said to me “I’ve had a great life and I have great kids and grandkids.” He was a great father, role model and grandfather. We know he was ready to join our mom, his wife of 62 years along with his daughter Sandie who are waiting for him.
We will miss him,......Always.
